This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is in an area that is a tough place to grow up. Gangs, drugs, and crime are a daily reality for my 6th and 7th grade science students. Even with the challenges my students face most of them realize that if they become better students they have a greater chance for the future.
Many of my students come to school without the most basic supplies. Their low income homes cannot help them. Imagine arriving at school after navigating some of the most dangerous streets in the city and not having a pencil or paper to record a science experience. Some how the journey does not seem worth the risk.
Basic supplies that any science classroom and student should have are needed. Poster boards, chart paper, glue sticks, scissors, crayons, markers, pencils, and double sided tape would help my students with science assignments and projects.
My students deserve the opportunity that preparation and reinforcement bring. They would be very thankful for any gifts that would help them realize their chance toward a brighter future.
