My Gifted Students Need Challenging Texts

My gifted students need books that will challenge them! Although many of my students are struggling, I have a cohort of gifted students who ask every day for interesting, challenging books written on their level. I want to expose them to high quality literature and eventually start book clubs in my class to push these students to excel.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English Language Arts in a high-need community. Many of my students struggle, but I have a cohort of students who have overcome all odds to perform not just on but above grade level. This group of eleven students are especially passionate readers who love intelligent, engaging conversations about literature. Unfortunately, in our low performing school, these gifted students are often overlooked.

One hurdle I face in educating these students is a dearth of challenging books. They will read just about anything, but I want to provide them with books that will push them to achieve even more. They are especially interested in historical and realistic fiction, and I know that high quality children's literature in these genres will propel them forward. I look forward to starting book clubs with them where they can read and discuss these books.

I have chosen books that I know will spark their interest and challenge them. Some of the texts, like Gary Paulsen's Sarny, were recommended by the students themselves. Others, like Lois Lowry's The Giver, are texts that expanded my mind and my knowledge of literature when I was in middle school and I would now like to share with these students. Introducing these texts to my classroom will ensure that these gifted students continue to move forward and achieve at even higher levels. I even plan to start book clubs where they can read independently and work together to discuss the themes and ideas. These book clubs will allow them to take ownership of their learning and become lifelong readers.

So often, I see bright, gifted students overlooked by a school that faces many challenges. These students don't cause problems, so the school tends to forget about them and fails to address their unique needs. You can make sure that these students are not forgotten and empower them to continue achieving at the highest levels. These books will challenge these amazing students who deserve the very best.
