Adolfo Camarillo High School is committed to high achievement. In an effort to do so, our principal is working on a movement to make all classes college preparatory. The ninth and eleventh grade classes I teach include three college preparatory designations and two standard (high school graduation track) classes. Because not all of my students are considered "high need," we are often overlooked for resources and supplies. This is actually turning into a hindrance in the potential for our students to receive a twenty-first century college preparatory education, which should include skills in information literacy and technology.

We have been left behind without technology. When I was first assigned to my classroom, I had an old computer, whose hard drive died in the second month of school. The television lacked a VGA connector, so I purchased one with my own money. I was also on the waiting list for an overhead projector I was told I would never get, until my in-laws purchased one for my birthday. My classroom has one, small, usable white board (the other one was scratched beyond repair or use before I arrived). Finally, I have signed up to take my students to the computer lab only to be told, on more than one occasion (while my classes congregate at the door), that someone else with a higher rank/authority needed to use it for another purpose and that we were out of luck.

Our classroom must become outfitted with adequate technology! The document camera is the first step in a long quest to acquire the materials we need to start building a twenty-first century classroom. I have utilized document cameras in previous classrooms to vary instruction, give real-time, explicit directions, and showcase student exemplars to a large class. The best part is the versatility of the document camera. It can project computer presentations, zoom in on a text or document, and save money on copies and overhead transparencies.
