Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Introducing: YES, Youth Empowerment School! YES is a small school in its second year. We currently teach 9th and 10th grade and will add a grade in the next two years. As a new school, we are still building our culture and community of EMPOWERMENT to fulfill our vision. We are also just beginning to build our media program.
This proposal is to support the Media Literacy Advisory at YES. “Advisories,” for which each teacher has a responsibility, are dedicated to augmenting student success, student voice and overall development of the school. As an inner-city school in East Oakland, there are many challenges for our young people. Resources, especially for arts and media, are scarce. We need your help.
One of the Media Literacy Advisory's goals is to allow our students to create media that constructs positive and accurate views of youth. Additionally, we aim to build the identity and constructive culture of our new school. To do so, we need access to the appropriate media tools. Specifically, we are asking for your help in obtaining a Panasonic D-snap SD Video Camera.
The Media Literacy project needs digital photo and video equipment as well as editing software. With this equipment, students will be able to create positive images of the school that will in turn yield more opportunities to grow the media program and create a unifying culture at YES. The students will learn necessary technological skills and build media literacy. The project will also have a positive impact on the entire school community. All 15 of the advisees (student media creators) and the entire student body of 200 (and growing) students will feel the positive impacts of the quality media programming and projects made possible with this equipment.
