I currently teach in a public high school (grades 9 - 12) in NYS, with about 400 students enrolled. We currently have (that we know about) 100 students who are smokers. About 60% of these students are also special education students.

Unfortunately, I try to speak to students on a daily basis about their nicotine habit, and how it is currently affecting their lives, and most of them shrug their shoulders and ignore me. As a volunteer EMS provider for the same community, I see on a weekly basis the effects that smoking has on a body, and the havoc that it wrecks on the lives of both the smoker and their family. Unfortunately, most of the special education students that I have use smoking to self - medicate, instead of finding more appropriate outlets for their frustrations with school. I have tried to start a smoking cessation program as an alternative to suspension, but have been met with much resistance from both the faculty and administration. I know that if I just make a difference in a few kids lives, and save their lives for their children and families, I will have served my purpose.

I am looking for help getting this smoking cessation program started. With no monetary support from the school at this point, it is difficult for me to get the supplies needed to get this project up and running. I would love hands on materials and videos to present to the students, to get them to understand just how addictive and destructive nicotine is.
