Special Ed is a fairly new department at the School of the Arts and we are just beginning to integrate our students into the school's arts programs. Because many of our kids are not quite ready for general education mainstreaming, however, they take art classes provided by the teachers and paraprofessionals in the Special Day Class department. One day, after discovering a pile of comic books in the recycling bin of my apartment complex, I decided to start a comic book class with the Special Day Class students, many of whom love to read comic books. A few student artists and writers gathered and worked harder than they probably had in their lives on a project to produce our first comic book: "Crazy White Boy, Part I: The Nightmare". The book is bursting with their humor and creativity. I used funds allocated to the special ed art department to purchase supplies, and we were able to scrape together some money to print 50 copies of the book. The students were very proud and excited to see the comic book that THEY had written and illustrated "in print". We are now working on "Crazy White Boy, part II: The Journals". We are able to purchase pens and paper for the project, but the printing will be a large cost - larger than the special ed art budget can manage. Your donation would make this book a reality for the students. We have just finished writing the story of Part II and have started on some thumbnail sketches and layouts. It will take hours and hours of their class time this year to complete the book. I would love to see them be able to hold the product of their hard work and creativity in their hands !
