Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I had the pleasure of teaching 29 wonderful second grade students this past year. Last year I realized that students' handwriting skills frequently came as an issue during our writing workshops. Although it was important for me to instruct students about their spelling and grammar when they were writing, it became even more important that students wrote neatly and legibly. After all, what do grammar and spelling errors matter if nothing you write can be read due to poor handwriting? I tried instructing students about spacing between words and other handwriting tips. However, for some children this was not enough. Some children really needed more instruction and support to cure their illegible writing habits. Another thing that bothered me is that students were never given any instruction or practice on cursive writing. Cursive writing should be introduced in second grade and yet there was no workbook for students to learn cursive writing from. Cursive writing is important and essential as children will be expected to learn to write their name in cursive in the form of a signature in order to validate important documents as they grow up. It is for these reasons that I think handwriting and cursive workbooks would benefit my students greatly.
