It's that time of year again, when I usually send out a link to my birthday registry at Target, but this year I'm shooting for something different. <br><br> So ... It's that time of year again, when I usually send out a link to my birthday registry at Target, but this year I'm shooting for something different. <br><br> So ... In lieu of gifts* this year, my birthday wish is to help our classrooms and students get the supplies they need to learn. <br> <br> <u>Rant Start</u><br> <br> <i>There are tragic events happening all of the time around the world - which trigger loads of donations, many from the US. <br> <br> And though I realize how crucial those donations are I think the US needs to face the reality of our own tragic event happening every day - our future - our children - are suffering due to budget and staff cuts in our school systems. <br> <br> It's horrible enough that many families operate at a high poverty level - sending their kids to school with dirty/tattered clothing and without school supplies and breakfast/lunch. Add in a school where the teachers do not even have the tools needed to effectively educate their classes and we are left with almost an entire generation - poorly educated, still at a high poverty level, and most likely disheartened by their circumstances - without the means to advance. <br> <br> This affects all of us in the US, even those without children. There are other countries deemed less 'wealthy' than the US that are generating engineers and doctors and scientists who learn English and are able to find work here. Most of our country's children will never reach the level of education needed for those professions - let alone learn another language.</i><br> <br> <u>Rant End </u><br> <br> My intention is not to cause an uproar or grand debate regarding my opinions on this subject and I truly hope that I have not upset or offended anyone by anything I've written. <br> <br> Please help me by picking a classroom project from the list below to support [or choose your own].<br> <br> Thanks in advance if you have actually read this much too long message.<br> <br> *OK, OK - I know I don't usually receive birthday gifts anyhow, but again - Our children and their futures is something I feel is <b><u>very</b></u> important. <br><br>Plus, if you've known me for more than a couple of years you know it's been awhile since I've involved anyone in one of my philanthropy projects. hide
