Hi Folks, I was intrigued by this site and with many of the posted proposals. As a start, I liked the idea of helping kids at P.S. 106, the Parkchester School, in the Bronx. This is the elementary school where my grandmother taught reading for many years, my father and aunt were students, and my mother was a substitute teacher. Now, the kids come from diverse, mostly immigrant, cultural backgrounds; many do not speak English as their first language; most are eligible for federally funded meal programs. Wouldn't it be great if some of them could go to a bookstore and have the experience of finding a book to explore & keep? The school needs lots of things, but this first proposal seemed like it would have a quick impact (see "Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader" link below). I've listed some of their other project proposals too. You can view several of the proposals from teachers at this school in the links below. If you'd like to contribute, you can do so online on this site, donorschoose.org. After reading the project description link, you will see a green button that's labeled "Fund Now." The great thing is that you don't have to fund an entire project to make it happen. Once enough folks do contribute to the project, the kids will get their books (or other materials for other projects)and donors will receive thanks and photos. Hope you'll consider this project and its potential impact. Thanks, Alissa hide
