Fun Fine Motor Activities For Kindergarten

My students need special pencils, recommended by the school Occupational Therapist, tactile letter cards, and letter formation activities in order to develop fine motor skills needed for handwriting.

My Students

My school is an elementary STEM school, currently grades K-2. We integrate reading and writing with the STEM concepts of science, technology, engineering, and math. The school is an urban school with the majority of the students coming from low-income households. All students in the district and my building receive a free breakfast and a free lunch. The students in my class are five and six years old. For some of them, kindergarten is their first school experience. My students are a combination of regular education students and students with special needs, who require Individualized Education Plans. We work and learn together so each student can be successful. The students are excited and eager to learn. They learn best when given opportunities for active learning through hands-on materials.

My Project

I start each school year with fewer than half of my students able to write their name correctly. Many students do not know how to hold and use pencils, crayons, and scissors correctly. The students have difficulty forming letters. They need to develop their hand and arm muscle strength.

Students need legible letter formation in order for others to understand and read their work.

I am requesting materials that will help my students develop fine motor skills to improve their handwriting. The specialty pencils will ensure that the students develop the correct grip on their pencils. The tactile letters will assist the students with letter formation practice as they develop and learn the proper way to form each letter of the alphabet. The Learning Letters Actvity Set will help the students strengthen their hand and arm muscles so they are able to complete writing task with the proper pencil pressure and to persevere during writing activities.
