My students are bilingual students who are transitioning into reading and writing in English after having been taught primarily in Spanish for the last three years. As third graders, my students are not only new to reading chapter books, but also to reading in English in general. Series books would help introduce my students both to English reading and chapter book reading by introducing them to interesting characters and plots. They come from backgrounds stricken with poverty and new books are an expensive commodity for them as well as for our school district in Denver, Colorado. My classroom in the 2011-2012 school year will be a new classroom and books and materials are needed to build my classroom due to the extreme budget cuts occurring in our district. Any and all materials that will help my students become great readers in the English language would be greatly appreciated and would be put to great use in the hands of my young English Language Learners.
