I teach elementary music at a Title 1 school in Oklahoma. Our student body is about 85% below poverty and are predominantly African American. Most of them live in one of the low income Section 8 housing complexes that are zoned for us. They come to me with a lot of baggage; some don't have food to eat at home, their parents have been shot and killed, they are fosters kids, or they come from abusive or neglectful households. I want my room to be that safe place that can give them that small portion of a happy childhood.
