My kids use a few different means of music making in music class. We sing (95% of the time), we use a few percussion instruments, and 4th/5th graders use recorders. Many kids are too shy to sing. Recorders demand fine motor skills that, depending on the child, are very hard to fine tune. They also require soft breathing, but many kids struggle to avoid over-blowing. Percussion instruments can be great if you have enough (and we don't). Ukuleles will give my kids a solid opportunity to make music together very easily. They can learn songs faster. They can get the hang of using a more engaging instrument. Some may even blossom into songwriters as well. Using ukuleles lends itself to endless creativity. Kids will be able to accompany themselves without worrying about playing the correct notes of a melody. Just strum the chord and sing! Connections will be made. Musicianship will increase. Ukuleles will give my students another means to be successful in music class. While I already teach the whole school, ukuleles will help me reach more kids.
