I teach at a small elementary school in Santa Rosa, California. Over half of the student population come from households struggling to make ends meet as well as a growing number of English Learners. Many families do not have access to the internet at home and the only real time my students get to work on a computer or use the resources available to them on the internet (reading intervention, typing classes, math workshops) is when they are with me. I get to work with a group of 30+ kids who each have their own set of unique qualities and abilities. One commonality with each one of them, however, is the desire to learn more and the excitement they get when they discover something new- even something so simple as a video of a polar bear scooting on her belly so as not to break the ice beneath them. My kids soak up new information like sponges and feel genuine excitement at the opportunity to expand their knowledge.
