We want the whole story! We've left the basal and we're not going back. I've been able to spark an interest in literature in my students and I want to fan that flame. Through shared reading, class discussions, and personal response I have been able to stimulate an interest in reading that the majority of my students lacked at the beginning of the year. These children have the odds against them. The charter school where I teach serves a low socio-economic community, the majority of whom are learning English as a new language. We, donors and I, have a chance to change their lives through literature.
