"I want to be a veterinarian because I love animals," "I want to be a police officer because I want to help people," "I want to be a teacher because I want to be just like you." These are some of my students' future dreams that they shared with me. It warms my heart listening to their aspirations and wishes of a better future with big hopeful smiles on their faces. However, their dreams will be stymied without the most basic of academic tools. So many of their parents want the best for the children. They have big dreams for their sons and daughters, but lack the financial resources to give their children the most basic of necessities for school and life in general. The need is great and the academic requirements and expectations are also great. If my children could get classroom packs of crayons, glue sticks, pencils, colored pencils, paper, and markers it would dramatically even out the playing field with other children in better funded schools. As there is a great emphasis on small group learning, an easel would help me facilitate the children's guided reading lessons more effectively. I am also asking for a pair of giant calming pillows to create a reading area in my classroom, They would also serve to provide my children a safe place to regroup when feeling stressed. These basic items will go a long way to prepare these little dreamers for greatness.
