My students are second graders at a bilingual charter school where 92% of students are impoverished. My class is taught in Spanish so my students can learn to read first in their native language, and then apply those skills to English reading later on. Our problem is that bilingual and Spanish-language books are hard to find! They are also often more expensive than English-language books, which puts them far out of reach for us. Very few of my students have books in their homes. Many of them do not even have access to a public library. However, this has not dimmed their enthusiasm for reading. Whenever a new book appears in our library, it is cause for excitement and celebration.
