Oark is an extremely rural, remote school in the mountains of Arkansas. We are considered a pioneer district and have appx. 180 students grades k-12 with severely low socioeconomic levels. I firmly believe that just because students go to a small school doesn't mean that they don't deserve the same opportunities as those in larger schools. We are in our 7th year of starting a band program at Oark and we have approximately 30 students involved with the program each year. Students can learn to play a band instrument such as flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, etc. or the piano. We perform in our school's annual Christmas program, Renaissance Festival, Patriotic and Veterans' Celebrations, as well as other concerts and in our area's band competitions. I also try to take the students on trips to hear other groups performing and allow them to connect with other musicians in our area since our town is so very isolated.
