My students are an energetic group of thirty-two fifth graders who embody the great diversity of the United States. They come from African American, Asian, Hispanic, and European American families, some who have been here for over a century and some who have just arrived. Of the thirty-two students in the class, twenty-six are bilingual and three are trilingual. Three are monolingual - two speak English only and one speaks Cantonese only. She just arrived two weeks ago from mainland China. Our school is an inner city school in the heart of downtown. We are housed in a heritage building which makes up in charm and craftsmanship what it lacks in modern classroom conveniences. This school is an academic giant which has won three state Distinguished School Awards, the Title I Academic Achievement Award every year since 2006, and the coveted National Blue Ribbon. We live by our motto: Believe in Yourself, Work Hard, Get Smart.
