I teach reading, writing, and social studies at a school located in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods on the South Side of Chicago. For many of my third graders, school is the safest, most positive place they can be. In my classroom they are able to temporarily forget about the potentially volatile circumstances of their home-life and immerse themselves in reading, writing, and learning. My boys and girls are resilient, spirited, and most of all--curious! They are hungry for new knowledge and opportunities.
