My high schoolers are newcomers who are dealing with a lot. Our school is located in a pretty rough part of the city where gangs and drugs are a constant presence just outside the windows. But honestly? My kids want absolutely nothing to do with that life. They are some of the most motivated, hardworking people I’ve ever met, and they show up every day ready to learn a brand-new language from scratch. They spend two hours a day in my room, and I want that time to feel like a total escape from the stress of the neighborhood. Right now, the room is drab and neglected, but I want to turn it into a cozy, safe "home base" where they can actually breathe and focus. They are choosing a better path against some really tough odds—the least I can do is give them a beautiful place to do it.
