Our students live in one of the smallest and poorest districts in our state. They have rich and creative thoughts and are working toward being able to express them in both English and in Spanish! Our district has begun a dual language program whose mission is to use the languages of the community to develop biliteracy and biculturalism in our students. All of my students speak Spanish at home, but do not necessarily have the resources to develop their linguistic abilities outside of those provided by school. Our program is committed to bringing students' home languages and experiences into the classroom where they learn to communicate in two languages at an academic level. This program gives students the opportunity to develop their own voice and opinion twice over through the reading, analysis, and discussion of great English AND Spanish texts.
