Only 33% of my students (8 out of 24) speak English as their primary language. The remainder of my class speak a different language at home and are continuously trying to build their knowledge of the English language. I teach at a Title 1 school where a majority of the 400+ students speak English as a second language and live below the poverty line. As an educator my goal is to not only inspire a love of reading, but to also build and develop the necessary reading skills my students will need in order to further their education and ideally leave their lives of poverty behind.
