The students I teach attend school in a 7-12th grade building in a rural community. This year I will be working with forty students of various needs and abilities. Some kids are already excellent readers and are gleeful about the prospect of reading in class or at home. Many of my students, however, view reading as a chore. They have the distraction of technology (video games, social networking sites, cellphones), their parents are busy and have a hard time overseeing or sharing in a reading routine, several students do not have access to reading materials at home, and many live in far-flung locations and therefore cannot access their local libraries. Also, being identified as a reader in our school is, unfortunately, still not that cool.
