My mission as a Boston Public School teacher is to ensure that all my students leave first grade loving to read and reading on grade level or above. You can help make that happen. By donating to our classroom library, you will provide 22 developing readers with high quality literature that engages their imagination and is accessible to their reading level. For instance, when students discovered the Piggie and Elephant series by Mo Willems (which I had borrowed from my local library), they were enchanted. Many began to stretch themselves to decode new words. Children who were more advanced readers reached out to newer readers to help them tackle new words and vice versa. The books on this list include authors who are familiar to the children or are highly regarded as literature for this age group. Contributing to a collection of series (like Amelia Bedelia, Mo Willems, etc.) promotes children's ability to get to know characters deeply and creates common reference points in my learning community. My students are excited to swap books and talk about beloved characters. Your contribution to our classroom library will help to engage our struggling readers, provide students with contemporary engaging children's literature and motivate them to develop their skills further. In short, to create a buzz for books!
