In my classroom you will find students who come from a wide range of backgrounds. Many of my students are first or second generation Americans whose families come from all across the world. In my class you will find children whose parents and grandparents came here from Iran, Israel, Mexico, Russia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Columbia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and the list goes on. I have students who are bused in from the inner city and I have students whose parents are middle class. In my class I have Jewish students, Christian students, Muslim students, Buddhist students, Hindi students, and students with no particular religious affiliation who are all learning side by side. But what do they all have in common? They’re all just kids who get excited by wonderful stories. This experience of reading together, sharing books, talking about what they are reading, how much they love the characters or hate the antagonists of these novels, brings my students together.
