The library I have the pleasure of overseeing serves an amazing and diverse group of students from a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Our small city, while nestled in a culturally uniform state, houses an amazingly diverse population. In our schools, a little over half of our population receives free or reduced price lunch, and an impressive 35% of our students are English Language Learners. Our schools have backpack and food pantry programs, helping ensure that basic needs are being met so students can focus on academics. Teachers and staff seek out grants and alternative funding on a regular basis, as our budgets are stretched thin with the competing needs of providing academic rigor, technology, and special education and ELL support to our wildly diverse population.
