This class of 5th grade students is composed of excited young learners. They come from many different cultures and countries around the world. Each student brings their own unique perspective to our classroom community. There are at least five different languages spoken in addition to English. We are located in a high poverty public elementary school in Portland, Oregon. Therefore, our students often do not have some of the advantages others their age do at home. We are a strong community, and practice working together collaboratively every day. Students are encouraged to discuss their thinking, challenge each other, and persist through difficult tasks. Many of their learning tasks require them to sit together, either at their desks or on the carpet. Learning to become positive and productive citizens is our number one goal this year.
