I teach the chess club at a high poverty urban elementary public school. School enrollment is approximately 435 (highly transient), 1-5 grade students with a poverty rate of 94% (percentage of students attending school who receive free and reduced lunch). Our Chess Club is made up of students from many different ethnic backgrounds and ability levels. Most students speak English at school but have home languages that include Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Laotian and Native American. Two years ago I started a chess club at my school. Last year our team earned the 2nd place trophy at a local Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation (WSCF) Tournament, they were ecstatic! Our lone trophy sits on an office shelf waiting for others to join it with the hopes of one day needing to build a trophy case. On December 6, 2014 our school is hosting our first ever WSCF Tournament which is open to any K- 12 student in Wisconsin. In preparation, we are hoping to recruit more students to our club.
