I work in an urban elementary school in the Cleveland. My students are great kids from a community that has its troubles. This school is a safe haven for them, and the gym is the place where they flock. My kids are students who when they feel lost throughout the day, they make their way to the gym. In the gym they know that they can blow off some steam (maybe from an argument at home), be the hero (because this may be the only place where they feel they can accomplish that), or simply just move around. For a lot of my kids, coming to the gym during their class is the only physical activity that they see during the day. My students make my gym a place full of laughter, pride, and respect. For most, it is the only place in their lives where they have some structure. To me, they are rock stars who deserve the rock star treatment!
