I teach 10th grade in a vocational high school in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston. My students come from both substantially separate Special Education and inclusion 10th grade ELA classes, where we focus on developing real world reading and writing skills and finding mirrors and windows in the literature we read. Our ELA class is a place where content knowledge, executive functioning skills, and literacy skills work hand in hand to help students see themselves as readers and writers. My students are daily readers and independent reading has become a huge part of our classroom routine and culture.
