This project will introduce third, fourth and fifth grade students with mild-moderate learning disabilities to art and the great artists of history in a literacy unit that will include reading and writing instruction, oral language and vocabulary-building, math concepts (geometry and spatial organization) and discussions using the Socratic Method. Students will read a variety of texts, some of which I already have purchased on my own, about the great artists of history, and create notebooks of Cornell Notes about them as they learn to read for information and organize it for use in writing (comparison/contrast and expository narrative) pieces. The students will work with me and my staff, as well as our Speech-Language Pathologist in small groups to practice vocabulary and oral language as we discuss the art, artists and artistic movements. In my list of requested donations, I included both fiction and non-fiction books. For example, after reading "Monet: Sunshine and Waterlillies", we will read "Linnea in Monet's Garden" and "The Magical Garden of Claude Monet." My desire is that the kids will explore how we can learn and understand real-life people and things in a variety of genres. We will also be watching films about Impressionism, the Modernist Movement, Prehistoric and Renaissance Art. Students will participate and create a variety of projects to demonstrate their understanding, including essays, reviews (imagine a Yelp review of Van Gogh's Haystacks or the Sistine Chapel), informational reports, journal entries, and art pieces of their own. The project will culminate in a Museum Open House to which parents and other classrooms will be invited. My students will share their knowledge, serving as docents for displays of their work and demonstrating their improved oral language and speaking skills.
