Our school is located on the Wind River Indian Reservation and is one of the most impoverished communities in the nation. Many of our students have tumultuous lives that is the result of generations of historical trauma. Often, school is seen as safe zone where students can rest and eat, but the benefits of an education are not a top priority when they are just trying to have their basic needs met every day. I want to create an academic reward zone for students so they can see the connection between achievement, learning, and fun. The Brain Station, located in my high school English classroom, will be an inclusive space of comfortable seating and engaging activities where students can relax and learn while having time away from their desks. Stocked with brain games, puzzles, and mindful art projects, students will be able to enter the "lounge" for a variety of reasons including excellent attendance, finishing work in a timely manner, and academic and athletic achievements. And sometimes, my students just need some time to get their emotions settled. I want there to be many reasons that students are able to have this reward time to encourage their success both in and out of my classroom.
