One of the most rewarding parts of teaching literature for me has always been the creative projects. Capturing the emotional conflicts of a main character is an exploration in critical thinking and planning. Whereas writing a research paper follows outlines and expected structures, using art to demonstrate understanding of concepts- how the stories tie to today or perhaps warn a cautionary warning for the future asks students to create something original. Continuing to bring art into a literature classroom has encountered challenges along the way; there are a few non-believers in my 'arts and crafts', but the warm memories of former students fortifies my unorthodox approach to assessing literary understanding. This year, continuing the creative projects has proven near impossible because of access to materials. With this donation, I hope to create a personal kit for each student so that they can create their own creative project for our world literature curriculum.
