First through fifth-grade students at my school come to the science lab classroom for hands-on learning twice per week. Their science investigations and engineering projects always take place in this compact span of time. Our current microwave has failed to meet our needs, as it is over 30 years old now and needs to be replaced. We use it at every grade level for the ease and speed it provides us during lessons and activities. The science lab classroom does not have access to any other way of heating materials and a new microwave will solve this problem in the safest and most compact way. Our old plastic teaching thermometers are very difficult for students to read and they are worn and broken easily with the repeated exposure to different temperatures and materials. Metal V-shaped thermometers are much simpler for students to learn how to read and they last much longer under the conditions we plan to use them in! A microwave and some durable thermometers will help provide my 350+ students with a chance to properly explore matter and the properties of materials. Materials science concepts are important for our students to learn. It is a precursor to engineering projects where students will be evaluating and choosing materials for their models and subsequent solutions to problems. With these new supplies, students in my classroom can be well on their way to learning about the connections between the properties of a material and its performance. They will be able to study if the heating process changes the way it performs. Or maybe, if we mix it with other types of matter do we create new and better materials for future use?
