I am a middle school ESOL teacher and I realized my students don't like to read a lot. I love books and reading, so I am determined to change my students' attitude during the current school year. I would like to get a large variety of interesting books with different topics, genres, and at least of three reading levels: one for the struggling readers; another for the on-grade readers; and finally, a more complex text for the ESOL students who need a challenge. Research shows that wide reading supports and impacts vocabulary growth, and that knowledge of vocabulary increases comprehension. The more students read inside and outside the classroom, the more vocabulary they will learn. Not only will students learn more words through reading, but they will also learn the meaning of words at a more in-depth level. Wide reading allows for the following: -Multiple exposures to new and known vocabulary -Use of new and known words in different contexts -Practice in using context to identify unknown words -Exposure to derivatives of known and unknown words -Multiple exposures to word roots and bases used with known and unknown words -Connections from known information to new information, increasing the understanding of words and word usage Research has also shown that when students are interested in a topic, they are more involved in reading. Thus, I would also like to get some books on topics that are interesting to my students. With a large library, my students will be able to have the "right" books available in my ESOL classroom. I love books and I believe that once they read the "right" ones, they will develop a love for reading, and hopefully, they will become great readers for life!
