Increased access to technology in my classroom will allow my students to utilize various district initiatives to support student literacy. Students will use the computers to access the Waterford Early Learning program, which teaches and reinforces foundational literacy skills. Students will also read on myON, an online library that gives my students access to thousands of culturally relevant and engaging books in both English and Spanish. I use technology such as myON, to extend student application of reading strategies and skills learned through our curriculum and to provide culturally relevant texts to my students. I assign books on myON that connect to the various topics students are learning about each day. This allows my English language learners to develop content-specific, academic vocabulary and view images and diagrams related to the subject. I also will serve as a demonstration classroom for other teachers who want to see how I utilize these initiatives in my classroom. I also use technology to differentiate mathematics instruction and to allow students to participate in online science labs. Furthermore, technology allows my students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways, such as by creating a collage, video or Power Point.
