No student in my class will be anxious to start school because they don't know what to expect. They need consistency, and anything less than that creates anxiety and behavior issues. They will walk into my colorful room showing them a whole new safe place to be. My goal is to make my room comfortable, inviting, and safe with everything they need to learn, grow, and succeed. With labels on their desks that won't come off, assigned carpet spots for lessons, a special reading carpet with phones if they need to whisper read to themselves, and privacy partitions if they have too many distractions and can't concentrate. All these things together can help set up a safe reading environment so they won't be afraid to lose themselves in a book! :)For example, my inviting math area will have a table covered in adhesive dry erase paper with enough wipe off markers for everyone! No mathematician will go without! Having individual supplies and spaces encourages the students to take better care of their things and respect property. Lastly, I encourage my students to express themselves and let's face it. Even if I didn't teach in a diverse school, there are no students that have orange or yellow skin tones! That's why I like to have people colors in my classroom for the more reflective projects like the first week of school self portraits and character drawings. Thank you again in advance for making a child in poverty's learning experience a little better. Every student deserves a chance.
