My fourth grade students are mainly in a poverty area and many of them do not have the means to have private education. That is why in our charter school we do our best to give them the best! We mainly have a Hispanic population, however, we also have Arabic, African Americans, Caucasian, and other minority kids. Although we are in a Hispanic neighborhood, parents do not always speak to kids in Spanish. Parents put their kids in our school because we have a dual language program where we provide students with Spanish and English education. As a Spanish teacher I have to look for innovative ways to capture the students attention since I am competing with their native language (English) and with an environment where English is constantly spoken. Over time kids lose interest in Spanish because is not a language they need.
