Being in over a 100-year-old building there are some things that we go without, one of them is central air. The first year of teaching at my school was stifling hot without an air-conditioner in the room. When a student is physically uncomfortable it is not fair to expect them to work to their full potential. The students and I had such a difficult time focusing in the heat, that we went to the cool basement to learn. The following year I bought an air-conditioner- it was the best classroom purchase I’ve made! I didn't have to worry of the heat affecting my students learning; however, ten years later, it needs to be replaced.
