We read several non-traditional novels in my class because (even though they are in high school) many of my students admit to never actually finishing a book all the way through or enjoying what they DID read, until having my class. I have a few class sets of novels which my students have absolutely loved, but am looking to add more. I have read The Boy Who Carried Bricks by Alton Carter with my students and they have begged for his second book, Aging Out, which I do not have, but am asking for in this Donors Choose project. We have a very diverse population of students and I want to be inclusive of all of our kids; therefore, I would also love a class set of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. It's a hilarious book that always tends to capture the reader and keep them interested. I've had kids who did not want to stop reading at the end of class, which would make any teacher extremely happy! Both books have an excellent message about breaking the cycle of poverty and the importance of education, while still managing to keep the reader's interest. Thank you for your consideration!
