"Hawaii Proud" are the words I would use to describe my students. Located in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and being in close proximity to Schofield Barracks military base, I have a unique demographic of students. They literally come from all around the world. Many of my students have recently migrated to Hawaii from the Pacific Islands and are just being introduced to the language and culture of America, specifically Hawaii. My military students, while not impoverished, have a different type of hardship, specifically, acclimating to the Hawaiian culture and customs. Despite these hardships, my students are full of energy and love lessons where they are active and engaged. I am interested in building a culture in my classroom that promotes unity and acceptance. A place where my students safe and free to make mistakes. A community.
