My school is in a very small rural town where my kids have grown up hiking mountains, building tree forts, riding bikes, and exploring the area rivers. My kids are some of the most beautiful souls I have ever met. They are genuine, authentic, full of energy, happy, active, and going through more than most of us can imagine. We have a high poverty rate at my school; forget iPhones, gaming systems, and name brand clothing. If my students come to school clean and fed, they are winning. They have many factors going against them in school. Several have parents who are illiterate and have dropped out of school; quite a few have parents who are in jail or are homeless. These students want to learn to read more than anything, and they let me know that. They, however, are not the most adept at sitting still to learn. And, really, why should they be? These are middle school boys with learning disabilities. They need unconventional, active, and new methods of learning the material their peers do.
