Ukuleles are hands-down the most accessible string instrument both in cost affordability as well as teachability. Elementary students have smaller hands and often struggle to play many string instruments but have the desire to. With 12 ukuleles, I would be able to bring them to one classroom at a time and be able to teach students safely so that we're not sharing instruments. Ukuleles are 4-stringed instruments with nylon (plastic) strings which make them really approachable by smaller music learners. I've found from personal experience that my students want to learn guitar. They pick it up, realize how much it hurts their fingers or can't reach their hand around the neck, and they give up. However, when I put a ukelele in their hand and can teach them three chords in less than 5 minutes they have immediate success and are motivated to learn more.
