I am the teacher of a very special program. The program is called "The Kindergarten Collaborative Model Classroom". The program is designed to hold twenty-four general education students and up to ten special needs students with disabilities ranging from mild autism, mild retardation, deaf/hard of hearing, developmentally delayed and emotionally disturbed students. I truly believe this program is a benefit both to the general education and special needs students. One of the first things I tell the parents when we meet for the first time is that ALL students have special needs. Whether they are highly gifted, on grade level, below or far below grade level they all need to be taught at their own individual level. In our program students have very different strengths and abilities. They come from all social economic and ethnic backgrounds and come with many heart warming and heart breaking life experiences. But the one thing they all have in common is the love they have for learning.
