Most of our students chose to leave the high school they were attending to take a chance on our pilot program where science and math take center stage. The high schools they left were low-performing and impacted by poverty. Our students have big dreams that they believed weren’t accessible where they were. My students are in 11th grade and are quickly improving their reading and writing skills. They don’t have a lot of experience with nonfiction books, and are not used to challenging assignments. Some are gifted. Some have learning differences. Some are learning English as a second language. They get frustrated, but they struggle on. In the semester that I’ve spent with them, I’ve been impressed by their willingness to try anything I ask of them and their ability to fail and try again. Most of them are planning to major in science at college or enter into the medical services industry. They hope for futures that will benefit the community where they live.
