My students are absolutely amazing. I work with largely gifted and high achievers in a Title 1 school. On "Take Your Child to Work Day", I saw two of my brightest students on campus before school started and I asked them why they hadn't gone to work with a parent. One replied by explaining that his father installed floors and he wasn't allowed to go along. The other responded explaining that her father drives a van to and from the airport. I have been teaching for 18 years and these are two of my best all-time all-around students. They are intelligent, creative, hard-working, kind, and friendly. And at that moment I became sad. Their families are amazing; they shaped these two youngsters into incredible young adults. But I also know that the road to success is a challenging one for kids like these coming from modest beginnings.
