Through this project, students applied real-world math skills such as budgeting, financial planning, and data analysis to determine how to best allocate funds toward purchasing age-appropriate books for younger readers at a neighboring elementary school. They researched reading levels, compared prices, and balanced their budgets to maximize the number of books they could donate—an authentic connection between mathematics and literacy that strengthened their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom became an experience that extended far beyond textbooks. Students collaborated in groups to explore different genres, analyze reading levels, and reflect on the joy that stories bring to young learners. The classroom buzzed with excitement as students discussed which titles might inspire curiosity or imagination in the children they were serving. When the books arrived, students used creativity to design personalized packaging, write encouraging notes, and wrap the gifts to deliver before the holidays. The act of reading aloud to the elementary students was especially powerful—my students practiced fluency, expression, and confidence while sharing the gift of reading with others.\r\n\r\nSeveral students, especially those who had not seen themselves as \"readers\" before, expressed how rewarding it felt to choose and share a story that would bring joy to someone else. One student who often struggled with engagement in class said, \"I finally got to use math for something that made someone smile.\" This project not only strengthened academic skills but also built empathy, teamwork, and a sense of purpose. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, my students learned that reading and mathematics together can spark both learning and kindness that truly make an impact in our community.","fullyFundedDate":1744249438551,"projectUrl":"project/reading-rockets-blast-off-into-books/9246901/","projectTitle":"Reading Rockets: Blast Off into Books!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Teelucksingh-Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp820418_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1508200256465","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/820418"},{"teacherId":2022520,"projectId":9400518,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for you generous donation. As a math teacher, I work with students who have historically struggled in the subject—many of whom carry negative experiences from earlier grades that have shaped how they see themselves as learners. These struggles often lead to disengagement, low confidence, and a lack of motivation in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThis project is designed to turn that around.\r\n\r\nBy opening a classroom store where students can earn classroom currency for positive behaviors—like participating in lessons, completing homework, and collaborating with classmates—I am creating a learning environment built on encouragement, consistency, and purpose. More than just a reward system, this structure helps foster intrinsic motivation by connecting effort with achievement and reinforcing the idea that hard work leads to personal growth.\r\n\r\nThe store will offer items such as fidget toys, snacks, and small rewards that reflect students' interests. These incentives may seem simple, but the impact they have is powerful. When students feel like their efforts matter and they begin to enjoy the learning process, everything changes—they engage more, take ownership of their progress, and begin to see themselves as capable.\r\n\r\nThrough this project, my ultimate goal is to build a stronger connection between academic responsibility and self-motivation—giving students not just tools for success in math, but skills they can carry with them beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nStudents faces lit up when they first saw me unpack the materials for the store. They were eager to see the store open up and even more excited to know when the store will be consistently scheduled to open. My students often remind me, don't forget to hand out our \"Brain Bucks\" to ensure that they earn their money for the store.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting our journey and helping my students soar toward success.","fullyFundedDate":1738963271410,"projectUrl":"project/soaring-to-student-success/8969790/","projectTitle":"Soaring to Student Success","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Teelucksingh-Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp820418_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1508200256465","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/820418"},{"teacherId":8358245,"projectId":8554803,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for giving my students the opportunity for a hands on experience in the classroom.
