My kids are the members of my high school's Gay-Straight Alliance. Now, imagine for a second what it would be like to be openly gay in high school. Imagine the courage it takes. I'll wait....it's not hard to imagine that you might get bullied. We all know a bully...my kids know many, and not just the gay kids either. Being a straight member of the GSA takes courage too. Perception is reality in high school. Join a GSA and you are under suspicion. My straight kids are the civil rights, freedom riders of their generation. My kids are smart, my kids are brave.... my kids are scared. And that's what makes them heroes, because my kids choose to stand, fight, and defend others even though they are scared and outnumbered. Imagine what that takes, I'll wait...
