Reading and Writing requires lots of paper and lots of pencils -- a limited resource in low income, urban schools. Sharing 40 copies of a text across 140+ students is cost prohibitive and limits the ability to provide relevant and engaging literature. I have chosen the Lenovo Laptop and we are fundraising to acquire a class set of 35 laptops and charging station. This will not only facilitate the reading/writing learning process but prepare them to leverage what is now an essential tool in higher education and the workplace. Computer literacy is extremely important in a world where high stakes testing at the state level for secondary school students and college entrance exams are done on a computer. My objective is to make reading and writing electronically a rote skill for my students. Technology brings the stories to life, allows students to annotate their text with purpose, and most importantly -- EXPERIENCE traditional and contemporary literature. Each child will have their own personal and "fresh" experience with the text and be able to annotate with purpose and organize details for writing. I'm also excited that they will also be able to edit their writing real-time!
